Does Mahalo Crash Your Firefox?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008
We at Mahalo have had quite a few reports of Firefox 3 crashing when visiting Mahalo.com. (Here’s a video of it happening.) We’d love to get this fixed, but we are unable to duplicate the problem on our own machines.

If this happens to you, here is some information that you could send us to help us out:

1. Your Operating System and Firefox versions. Example: Mac OSX 10.4.11, Firefox 3.0RC1.
2. Whether you’re logged into Mahalo when it happens.
3. prefs.js. This file is found in your Firefox profile directory, and it contains any changes you’ve made to Firefox’s default settings. It doesn’t contain any especially private or personally identifiable information. (Where is my Firefox profile directory?)
4. If you can get Mahalo to crash Firefox in a clean profile (one without any personal information like passwords or an extensive browsing history), then sending us a ZIP of your entire profile directory would be extremely helpful. If the crashing happens in your regular, every-day browsing profile, please don’t send this to us if there’s any chance that it includes information that you don’t want anyone else to know, like usernames, passwords, or browsing history.

So if you’d like to help us fix this problem, send as much of this information as you can to rays@mahalo.com. Just remember: We’re all in this together. We don’t want Firefox to crash any more than you do.

Mahalo Share FTW

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Chris Finke sent around an email this morning stating that Mahalo Share is now a recommended Firefox add-on! If you haven’t tried Mahalo Share, or don’t know what it does, here is a description ripped from the Mozilla site.

Share and recommend Web pages across many different services; recommend a link once and have it automatically posted to any of Twitter, del.icio.us, MySpace, Ma.gnolia, Jaiku, your Tumblr blog, Facebook, Pownce, StumbleUpon, Mahalo, Faves, or Google Bookmarks. Press Ctrl+Shift+S (or Apple+Shift+S) to share the page you’re viewing. (There is a toolbar button as well.) Then, fill out the form that pops up and check the services that you want to post to. Mahalo Share will automatically post your link to all of your services. If the services you are posting to go down (as Twitter often does), Share will save the link it was sending and try again later. When this happens, an icon will appear in the status bar to notify you. As of version 1.3, you can store your account passwords with Mahalo so that you can use Mahalo Share on more than one computer without retyping all of your account information. Just click the checkbox titled “Link my login data with my Mahalo account” in the Mahalo Share options dialog.

Update: garthk on twitter asks: @rays, what are Mahalo Share’s benefits or hazards vs Shareaholic?

So Chris Finke gave the following answer:

  • benefits: it auto-submits to each service, without you having to take further action for each one
  • shareaholic just opens the submit window for each service, pre-filled
  • drawbacks: doesn’t have as many services, doesn’t give you statistical information like shareaholic does

Special:Feeds

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Today I posted a message in the Google Group for Mahalo Development that talked about a new set of tools for 3rd party developers.

Along with Mahalo Social we deployed a new Special page to handle feeds for that data. We are providing them in Atom, RSS2 and JSON formats (we just added JSON a couple of days ago)
I wrote up a quick example for reading in your links that you have submitted to Mahalo via Python using the JSON output format
import simplejson, urllib2
f = urllib2.urlopen('http://www.mahalo.com/Special:Feeds?group=people
                            &un=rslakinski&action=links&type=json');
data = f.read()
links = simplejson.loads(data)
del(data)
if len(links) > 0:
    for link in links:
        print 'Title: %s' % link['linktitle']
        print ‘Description: %s’ % link['linkdescription']
        print ‘URL: %s’ % link['linkurl']
        print ‘Submitted On: %s\r\n’ % link['linkpub_date']
If you read the post, you’ll find out how to get a list of a users friends, fans, who the user is a fan of and links posted by the users friends!

Now on WP

Friday, January 11th, 2008

So Jason over at SDF1.net got us moved over to Dreamhost from his dedicated DSL line and off of MoveableType and onto Wordpress Which is great because I’ve been dying to try some of the cool plugins that Chris Miller put together for Mahalo. They are currently unreleased, but I’m sure once we get through the testing we will make them available for all to play with.

Now I just need a nicer template since I lost the really nice one I had that Sean Jackson did (also from Mahalo) for me a few years ago :( Any volunteers?
